Is microwave popcorn healthy?

Popcorn has more protein than any other cereal grain. It also has more iron than eggs or roast beef. It has more fiber than pretzels or potato chips. It is the only snack that is 100% unprocessed whole grain.

Does popcorn have any unique health benefits?

Popcorn is a natural whole grain, it contains all of the fiber from the bran, not to mention the minerals, B complex vitamins, and vitamin E that is stored there. In terms of digestion, the high fiber content keeps your body “regular”.

Fiber functions in another beneficial way within the body, and whole grains contain the type of fiber which can strip off excess cholesterol from the walls of blood vessels and arteries, thereby reducing your overall cholesterol levels, and lowering your chances of dangerous cardiovascular conditions like atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes.

What is the difference between the „regular” corn and the popcorn?

Popcorn, also known as popping corn, is a type of corn and puffs up when heated. Popcorn is able to pop because its kernels have a hard moisture-sealed hull and a dense starchy interior. The difference is that a different kernel is planted for each variety or corn. The plants will look similar to field corn, and taller than sweet corn.

What country eats the most popcorn?

Americans eat around 17 billion quarts of popcorn every year. This amount would fill the Empire State Building 18 times.

What makes popcorn pop?

Each kernel of popcorn contains a small drop of water stored inside a circle of soft starch. Popcorn needs between 13.5-14% moisture to pop.  The soft starch is surrounded by the kernel’s hard outer surface. As the kernel heats up, the water begins to expand.  Around 212 degrees the water turns into steam and changes the starch inside each kernel into a superhot gelatinous goop.  The kernel continues to heat to about 347 degrees.  The pressure inside the grain will reach 135 pounds per square inch before finally bursting the hull open.

As it explodes, steam inside the kernel is released.  The soft starch inside the popcorn becomes inflated and spills out, cooling immediately and forming into the odd shape we know and love.  A kernel will swell 40-50 times its original size!

Why does my popcorn pop poorly?

Be sure to check the expiration date on the package before you hit the Power button. If the kernels are old and dry, they won’t pop. Because microwave ovens vary, always cook your popcorn to „sound”—and listen to the pop to know when to stop. To maximize taste, shake contents of bag before pouring into bowl. This will help coat the popcorn with the flavor. To maximize crispness, be sure to open or vent the bag immediately after cooking.

What is the best way to store microwave popcorn?

Store product in a cool place such as a cupboard out of direct sunlight. Avoid the refrigerator. Some say the cold storage makes the popcorn taste better, but many refrigerators contain little moisture and can dry out kernels. Always keep your popcorn bags sealed in the original plastic wrapper until you’re ready to begin cooking.

What is the self life of your microwave popcorn?

24 months.

How do microwave ovens heat food?

The commonly used frequency of microwaves, 2.45 gigahertz, is easily absorbed by water, fat, and sugar. Microwaves heat food, like a cup of coffee or a slice of lasagna, by twisting water molecules back and forth. As the molecules twist back and forth, they rub into each other. This creates friction, which produces heat. A microwave cooks food much faster than a conventional oven because it heats both the inside and outside of the food the same time.

Does microwave cooking change the food that it cooks?

Comparative cooking method studies generally find that, if properly used, microwave cooking does not affect the nutrient content of foods to a larger extent than conventional heating.

Is it dangerous to stand infront of a microwave while it is cooking?

Standing in front of your microwave may increase your exposures to microwave radiation; however, such increases are likely to be low, especially when compared to your exposures to microwave radiation from your cell phone. You should be aware, however, that your oven could leak more microwave radiation, if it gets damaged, is dirty, or is improperly operated or maintained. If your oven is damaged in any way, you should not use it until it has been repaired by an appropriately qualified service engineer.
